I love having conversations with youth or young adults, as they share their aspirations, dreams, concerns or frustration about their future. I thought I'd share a few common questions I get from students or parents, and some brief responses to "prime" their initiative to get into the driver seat of the wonderful vehicle of life.
Q: What should I do after high school?
A: Start planning now, and take lots of notes! Explore, learn and plan for real career opportunities. You can start by talking to your teacher or counselor about finding some hands-on work opportunities, usually in the form of internships (paid or unpaid) at an organization. Don't be afraid of not knowing anything, and be open-minded with a serious desire to learn. Most business owners or managers who take on interns are already aware of their role in helping you gain job experience (ex: What's it like to be a baker, welder, graphic designer, police officer). ALSO, consider a career coach, like Sirena-T -- with a professional who is caring and knowledgeable about navigating the world of work, and education and training opportunities and resources.
Q: How can I help my child or grandchild prepare for the world of work or college?
A: First spend some dedicated time to examine and reflect on the real opportunities and challenges about the world of work, as well as the education and training options. Also, encourage your youth to do a "career assessment," which his/her school should have available You can ask him/her to share with you the results of their career assessment, and pair that with the important facts you collected. This would be a great opportunity to strengthen your understanding and relationship, and reduce unnecessary stress or financial costs. With all the information flooding the web or shared by others, it can get overwhelming. Sirena-T is here to help.
Here is a quote from a client after just one Career Coaching session:
"My daughter felt motivated and validated. She liked seeing so many different jobs that "fit" her personality and talents, especially one matching her interest in both business and law enforcement..."
-- Arlene G. Mother of 17 year old
